I'm going to come right out and say it: policemen, teachers, and other public servants (excluding firemen, they are okay) are treated as elite, and I can't figure out why. Let's start with police. People say that the police are great public servants and we should appreciate their work. Why should I appreciate what they do? Every damn police car I've seen in the past month has been either (1) waiting to pull over the guy trying to get to work so he can support his family, or (2) pulling said guy over. Maybe I would start appreciating what they did if they actually started solving crimes!
Now teachers, shall we? In most schools across the country, there is a "teacher appreciation week", where students are 'encouraged' to give their teachers some kind of gift. WTF. Don't we already gift them a gift with our, y'know, PROPERTY TAXES? Think about it. People doing hard jobs, like fighting wars or putting out infernal blazes are barely recognized, if at all.
But no, most people say, you can't say these things. It's socially unacceptable. You're a hatemonger. You don't want children to learn. You don't care about public safety. You want puppies to be eaten by sharks (huh?). Our culture is taught to bow down to these icons like gods, and I'm sick of it. If policemen got back to doing their job (solving crimes, anyone?) then maybe I'd respect them.

You know, there are cops out there who actually do their jobs correctly, who actually put their lives on the line. A police officer here was killed in the line of duty. Many officers across the country have died upholding the law. I dunno how they are up there in cushy Washington, but just because the police officers in your neck of the woods fucking suck, don't you dare lump all cops into it. I know perfectly well--being from Minneapolis where every other week, there's a news report of police overstepping their authority--that not all police officers live up to the high regard some view them with, but that does not mean all police officers are dirty.
ReplyDeleteAnd with teachers, I agree that some are much too arrogant for their own good, but there still are those who are worth being appreciated, my high school calculus teacher for example. A teacher's job is to teach, to pass on knowledge to younger generations, so that we may have the opportunity to be someone in life. And not all the taxes paid goes to education. Even then, not all the taxes paid that goes to education even goes to the teachers. You make it seem like by paying taxes, we're granting teachers with all the riches of the world when it is so far from the truth. One thing that teachers ought to be appreciated for is the fact that they even do what they do when they could have gone into any profession they wanted and earned a greater salary. Despite what you may think, public school teachers are paid that much. Think about it. All the hours you have to be at school, teachers have to be there for much longer. Then at home, they have to go through and grade all the work their students turned in in every class they have, then they have to form lesson plans for the days to come. Not to mention, they have to put up with angsty, ignorant little children. For their pay grade, it's almost not worth it. I say almost because for most, it's not about the money but about the chance of making a difference in the lives of young people.
Point is worthiness varies on an individual level. Just because some of the teachers and cops in your minuscule part of the country suck, don't assume there aren't good people elsewhere that really are worthy of our respect and appreciation. Come down from your high horse and quit generalizing, you ignorant sob.
I actually have a teacher who owned a company and was making 30k a week, but gave it up so he could teach.
ReplyDeleteWell, you see, unless you are a criminal or have a friend who is a criminal, you usually don't see police after you. Also, Bothell doesn't exactly have the highest crime rate. Or anywhere near it. In fact, now that I think about it, isn't it far from having the highest crime rate? And yet you expect to see police catching criminals? No, no, no, that is not how it works. Teachers don't seem to work all too hard, though, but again, they do not make a giant sum of money for their work. I don't exactly see what you are complaining about. You are not paying taxes-- though if I am wrong, correct me-- and you have little reason to dislike them. Teacher Appreciation Week is a little much, but nowhere near god-status. Exaggeration or not, it really isn't too huge of an issue. Now, if you made the argument that the money is being wasted on this instead of, say, doing something useful like terraforming Mars, I could see your point. However, the government is too lazy to do that anyway, so I don't care much. I don't consider you a hatemonger, but I still don't see the point to this.
